VICTORY FOR FRAIKIN IN BELFAST David Fraikin of Belgium took the Individual Grand Prix of Belfast, beating top seed and favourite, Massimo Cremona of Malta, on a sudden-death shoot-out in the final, after victories against Steve Hawkins, Olivier Pere and Joe Mifsud in the knock-out rounds. He is the 2nd Belgian player to win the Belfast Grand Prix, following in the footsteps of his Hennuyer club-mate, David Ruelle, who won last year. There were no real surprises in the early stages, as the eight seeded players won their groups, although, after drawing his first match against Anders Buhl-Hansen, Massimo Cremona proceeded to demolish newcomer, Brian Moore of the local Bangor Club, 26-0 to ensure that he won the group on goal-difference. John Moore was the only Irish player to progress to the Last 16, where he lost to Belgian, Nathan Dupont. The quarter-finals were closely contested, with single goal victories for Cremona over Dupont and Joe Mifsud over Kaspar Bennett in a firey encounter. Chris Thomas kept English hopes alive with a golden-goal against Laurent Goor and Fraikin beat team-mate, Olivier Pere 3-1, before eliminating last year's runner-up, Joe Mifsud, in the semi-finals. Cremona beat Thomas in the other semi but just didn't have enough to overcome the ever-improving Fraikin in the final. There was home success for Andrew Morrison in the Under-19s and Kenny Beggs in the Veterans. Morrison won his U-19 group comfortably, before beating Georgia Lee 3-0 in the final. Georgia also finished runner-up in the Ladies event to World No.1 female, Kamilla Kristensen of Denmark. Beggs took his first FISTF Veteran's title with a 4-1 final victory over England's Adrian Curtis, despite losing to him earlier in the group. Northern Ireland's Donal Convery, who had topped his group with noteable victories over Iain Bell and Davy Clegg, lost by a single goal to Beggs in the semi-final. The other semi went to extra-time, Curtis eventually beating Clegg with a golden goal. England's top Junior, Sam Curtis, beat current Northern Ireland Junior Champion, Peter Morrison, 3-2 in the U-15 final, after they had topped the four-player junior group ahead of Adam Scullion and Judith Morrison. HENNUYER WIN BELFAST TEAM EVENT Belgian club, Avenir Subbuteo Hennuyer, won the Team Grand Prix, beating English Premier League 3-1 in the final. Victories for Dupont, Goor & Fraikin secured the match, while Kasper Bennett gained consolation for the English (and revenge for his Open defeat) with a 1-0 success over Hennuyer's Maltese player, Joe Mifsud. Only four teams entered, with Lega-Liga Odense of Denmark finishing 3rd and Irish Premier League 4th. The venue at Northern Ireland's award-winning tourist attraction, W5 Discovery Centre, again proved popular, with the general public being able to watch from the balconies and on the big screen. Kids were also able to take part in a penalty flick competition each day and get information about the local Table-Football scene.
