DUNMURRY OPEN 2008 ------------------ Kenny Beggs won both the Open and Veteran events, with Final victories against Gary Moore and Stephen Rodgers respectively. Peter Morrison beat John Hughes in the Under-19 Final and was runner-up to Mark Farrell in the Plate. The Open was a tough event and Beggs was made to work hard for the title. The No.1 seed was fortunate to get through his group, following a 1-1 draw with Stephen Rodgers and a 0-0 draw with Mark Farrell. Rodgers and Farrell also drew 1-1 with each other, which left all three players on two points and zero goal-difference. Rodgers topped the group, having scored more goals but Beggs and Farrell were equal and so required a shoot-out to determine who qualified in 2nd spot. After five shots each, they were still level at 3-3 but Farrell missed his first sudden-death shot and Beggs scored his to advance to the quarter-final where he would meet John Moore. The pressure was immediately on Beggs again, as Moore took an early lead but Beggs equalised in the 2nd half and scored a golden-goal in extra time. A single goal was enough to beat Joe McRoberts in the semi-final, while the Final was a similar story, with a goal in the first minute clinching a 1-0 victory against Gary Moore. The tournament produced some other interesting matches. In Group B, No.2 seed, Barry Spence failed to qualify, following a 0-0 draw with Eoin Adams and a 2-3 defeat to Joe McRoberts. Adams qualified with another 0-0 draw against McRoberts but was involved in the best match of the day in his quarter-final with Gary Moore. He led 3-2 with less than a minute remaining but Moore equalised and went on to score the golden-goal to win 4-3. In Group D, a shoot-out was required to separate father and son, Alistair and Peter Morrison. Alistair was in fine shooting form, however, and won convincingly, 4-1. Stephen Rodgers will be pleased with his own performances, reaching the Open semi-final and the Veteran Final. INTERNATIONAL FRIENDLY ---------------------- The day was rounded off with an International Friendly between Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, which the Southern lads won 2-1, giving them their first victory over the North since 2004 UK & Ireland Internationals in Preston. -------------------------------------- N.Ireland 1-2 Rep of Ireland -------------------------------------- J.McRoberts 3-5 G.Moore K.Beggs 3-1 M.Farrell S.Rodgers 1-3 J.Moore E.Adams 0-0 N.Moore
